Phacoemulsification is the world’s most modern and well established way of doing cataract surgery with intra ocular lens implantation. Phacoemulsification machine is a computer controlled electronic machine. It has an ultrasonic probe which is introduced through 1.8mm small tunnel. It crushes the hard part of cataract in the powder form and aspirates through the same tunnel. once the nucleus is emulsified & aspirated, intra -ocular lens is implanted.

The Human Eye

The human eye is virtually like a camera with a system of lenses (cornea & lens) focusing light to form a clear image on the film (retina).

Advantages of Phacoemulsification

  • The surgical pracedure lasts for 10 minutes and patient is discharged from the hospital after 2 hours stay.
  • The smaller wound needs no stitches.
  • The procedure carries the least possible risk of infection and no risk of suture related problems.
  • Since the wound is small,it heals faster.
  • Protection against water or specific posture is not needed.
  • After operation, the requirement of cylindrical number is reduced and therefore vision is cleared.
  • Quite safe for diabetic and asthmatic patients.

Artificial lens implantation during cataract surgery

(Phacoemulsification) Artificial lens that is implanted is of the power and design so as to replace the natural human lens. Intra ocular lens implantation avoids all difficulties of aphakia(cataract surgery without lens implantation) Main being:
  • Magnification of objects.
  • Double vision if one eye has undergone surgery without lens and other is normal.
  • Need to rotate the neck to visualize the objects in the periphery.
Artificial lenses are of following types:
  • Non foldable
  • Foldable
  • Accomodative
  • Multifocal
Nonfoldable lens implantation requires a bigger wound size (5.5mm) as compared foldable one (3.2mm).
Natural foldable lens: This lens blocks the blue rays of sunlight from entering the eye so as to lessen the chances of age related macular degeneration.
Even after cataract surgery with lens implantation, one needs to use minor spectacle correction for distance & near. However, with the use of Multifocal lens / Accomodative lens, the requirement of spectacle is very much reduced or almost nil. The risk of any complication in cataract surgery with or without lens implantation is the same.
During cataract surgery, a membrane is left behind for the support of lens. In some patients after some time, this layer tends to have deposits and the patient starts having blurred vision.
These deposits are removed by YAG laser or capsule polishing and thus vision improves. The chances of deposits on this layer are more with nonfoldable as compared foldable one.
Lens implantation can be done in patients of high B.P. and diabetics. Even children more then 6 months can be planned for lens implantation.
The type of lens to be implanted in a particular patient is decided after sonography of the eye. The patient, who has undergone cataract surgery without lens earlier, can be planned for lens implantation of course after thorough eye exam.
Intaocular lens implantation is quite safe and it brings your vision quite closer to natural one.

Is Crystalens right for you ?

What is Crystalens ?

Crystalens is an artificial lens implant that, unlike a standard IOL, can treat both a person’s cataracts and presbyopia—loss of near and intermediate vision. You probably noticed in your forties that you started to lose some of your up-close vision and had to start wearing reading glasses. Crystalens not only treats your cataracts (a clouding or hardening of your lens); many patients hardly if ever wear glasses after surgery. It does so by recreating accommodation similar to your eye’s natural lens. The unique Crystalens is designed to allow you to enjoy a fuller, more natural range of vision for most activities, including: reading a book, working on the computer, and driving a car.
Crystalens was modeled after the human eye. Like the natural lens, it is a lens implant that uses the eye muscle to flex and accommodate in order to focus on objects in the environment at all distances. Crystalens dynamically adjusts to your visual needs.

The Crystalens Procedure – About Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the world. Crystalens is implanted during standard outpatient cataract surgery.
In the United States, on average over 8,000 cataract procedures are performed a day. The cataract procedure is quick, simple and allows for relatively fast healing. This safe and painless procedure typically starts with eye-numbing drops and a micro incision being made at the edge of the cornea. The natural lens is gently washed away and Crystalens is implanted. Crystalens can be implanted quickly and without sensation. Most patients return for a follow-up visit with the physician the day after surgery.
The recovery period is usually short. Most patients are able to pursue normal activities almost immediately after surgery. Patients usually have a follow-up visit scheduled with the surgeon to evaluate the patient’s recovery. (Discuss with your doctor beforehand what to expect before, during, and after the procedure in terms of eye drops and office visits.)
If you are like most patients who have Crystalens, you can expect to see sharper images than you have seen in years.
